“Do you guys ever think about dying?”

Listen, if I had ever made a list of things I did not expect Barbie to say, this question would probably be on it. But Barbie is a Greta Gerwig movie, and there are a lot of unexpected things in it. Including the fact that Barbie (Margot Robbie) gets Birkenstock-pilled into discovering the real world.

Yeah, I said it: Barbie is basically Neo.

Maybe we should have expected this. After all, the first Barbie teaser went full Kubrick. Gerwig is not messing around—or rather, she is, but in the best way possible. As the trailer brazenly says, this movie is for you if you love Barbie, and it’s also for you if you hate Barbie.

If you hate Ken (Ryan Gosling), you might enjoy it even more, given that Barbie seems to barely tolerate him. As the summary says: “To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”

But she’s got bigger things to worry about than Ken’s obliviousness: Cold showers! Flat feet! The horror!

Barbie stars a patently absurd list of actors, many (but not all) of whom are playing Barbies. We’ve got America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, Jamie Demetriou, Connor Swindells, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Ritu Arya, Dua Lipa, and, yes, Helen Mirren.

Get ready to party with Barbie in theaters on July 21st. If the Indigo Girls are on board, shouldn’t we all be?
